OPERA APERTA reclaims repair as a creative and radical practice, one that extends beyond buildings to care for institutions, communities, ecosystems, and the fragile ties between them.
Over the next six months, an international team and local collectives will carry out a process of social and ecological repair within the Complesso di Santa Maria Ausiliatrice, focusing on what can be conserved, repurposed, and reactivated.
At the heart of this transformation are artisans and restorers. Their work, supported by experimental sessions from the Università Internazionale dell’Arte, ensures that traditional techniques are preserved and passed on.
Here, repair is not only structural but relational. It creates conditions for mutual care and seeks to restore value to that which has often been overlooked or neglected. The building’s cracks, stains, and weathering are not treated as flaws to be concealed, but as thresholds for transformation. These conditions allow for a reimagining of the relationship between growth and decay; they honor the layered histories embedded in the place and acknowledge the lives of those who came before–while making space for new forms of intelligence to emerge.
This attitude permeates every corner of the building, through embodied and restorative experiences such as food and music, open to all. A communal table hosted by Nonsoloverde offers shared meals and invites dialogue between residents and visitors, while rehearsal rooms welcome students from the Conservatory of Music of Venice and their impromptu audiences.
The project advocates for an architecture that is responsive rather than prescriptive; a site of cultural and material engagement deeply rooted in the communities it serves: Venice, its inhabitants, those in transit, and the newly arrived.
OPERA APERTA is an opportunity to position architecture as an act of stewardship, and to infuse both the discipline and the world at large with a renewed sense of purpose in these uncertain times.

VENEZIA, VE
Over the course of six months, this space–the Complesso di Santa Maria Ausiliatrice–will be the site of a collective repair initiative. At the heart of this transformation is the expertise of restorers: local specialists in the recovery of works in stone, marble, terracotta, stucco, wood, and metal.
Taking place from Tuesdays to Fridays, the restoration work they lead will be visible to anyone interested, offering a rare opportunity to witness craftsmanship in action.
Two afternoons per week, on Tuesdays and Fridays, the UIA – Università Internazionale dell’Arte will host a series of restoration and rehabilitation experiments, ensuring that traditional construction techniques are passed on to new generations and reinforcing a long-term commitment to sustaining these skills. You are welcome to take part and contribute to this conversation on what can–or should–be conserved, repurposed, and reactivated.
In restoring this building, we pay close attention to its cracks, efflorescence, mold, peeling paint, rot, rust, stains, and weathering. We draw them, again and again. Instead of seeing these conditions as pathologies, we understand them as part of a larger metabolic process–signs of life in a living structure inhabited by microorganisms that thrive in Venice’s salty environment, along with insects, spiders, birds, and the humans who call it home. Through architectural drawing as a practice of representation and recognition, we seek to honor those who came before us, those yet to come, and to make visible what has long been overlooked or excluded.
You are currently in one of the rehearsal rooms activated in collaboration with the Conservatory of Music of Venice. Opera Aperta embraces a notion of repair that includes cultural exchange through moments of conviviality and music. On Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays,, these spaces open their doors to musicians, who can reserve instruments–including harpsichord, piano, and grand piano–for rehearsal. Their compositions, experiments, and improvisations drift through the building, inviting all who listen to become part of an unfolding soundscape.
Restoration is a creative, living practice that extends beyond buildings to nurture communities and ecosystems. This communal table is hosted by Nonsoloverde, a cooperative dedicated to empowering disadvantaged groups. It brings together visitors and local residents, creating a space for encounters and shared meals with locally sourced food. Everybody is invited to join the Open Table twice a week, on Tuesdays and Fridays.

With the Venice Architecture Biennale underway, we collect 10 exhibitions and pavilions outside the event's Giardini and Arsenale venues that you might have missed.
At the 19th International Architecture Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia, the Dicastery for Culture and Education presents "Opera Aperta", a project that positions architecture as a practice of collective care and responsibility. Curated by Marina Otero Verzier and Giovanna Zabotti, Opera Aperta is set within the Santa Maria Ausiliatrice Complex in Venice's Castello district. Designed by Tatiana Bilbao ESTUDIO and MAIO Architects, the project transforms the 500-square-meter site into a space for collaborative restoration and public engagement. Conceived as a work in progress rather than a finished installation, Opera Aperta functions as a platform for ongoing exchange, participation, and engagement rooted in the local context. This open and process-oriented approach was recognized during the opening events, where the Holy See Pavilion received the Golden Lion's Special Mention for National Participation.

Intervista sull’arte «Mistica dell’insieme»...
“Everything in the world is connected… The society is also enriched by a countless array of organizations which work to promote the common good and to defend the environment, whether natural or urban. Some, for example, show concern for a public place (a building, a fountain, an abandoned monument, a landscape, a square), and strive to protect, restore, improve or beautify it as something belonging to everyone. Around these community actions, relationships develop or are recovered and a new social fabric emerges. Thus, a community can break out of the indifference induced by consumerism. These actions cultivate a shared identity, with a story which can be remembered and handed on. In this way, the world is cared”.
